Can Social Media Help End Malaria? Let’s Find Out…
Posted by cgseo under Social Media
Sunday, April 25th is World Malaria Day and the United Nations is placing its hopes on you and the social graphs you’ve nurtured to finally end this deadly, yet preventable disease. You see, every 30 seconds, a child in Africa dies from malaria and every 10 seconds, another case is diagnosed. That might not mean a lot to you…I’m sure where you are right now is probably the furthest away from Malaria and Africa. But even where you are, right now, you’re in a place to actually save a life…literally. Please join the efforts to #endmalaria. All it takes is a $10 donation here . Or, text the word “NETS” to 864233, and a $10 donation will be charged directly to your cell phone bill. 100% of the proceeds will be given to UNICEF, used to buy treated mosquito nets, the lowest cost and most effective way to prevent malaria. Once you’ve donated, please help spread the word using the #endmalaria banner. To kick start the effort today, I reached out to good friend and one of my favorite artists, Hugh MacLeod ( @gapingvoid ). He designed an original piece ( above ) in the hopes of spreading awareness and support using art as a social object. World Malaria Day Sub-Saharan Africa is the epicenter of the world’s malaria control activities, with over 90% of malaria deaths occurring on the continent. Over 190 million long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets have been delivered since 2007, covering nearly 400 million people or over 50% of the endemic population, compared to less than 10% in 2005. On the anniversary of World Malaria Day, we are setting a goal to close the gap of bed nets needed to eradicate malaria. In order to reach this goal, we need $10, which buys a treated net to protect children while they sleep. The World Bank announced this week that it has joined the fight against malaria. To do so, it will donate a whopping $200 million to buy 25 million nets. That massive gesture takes us half way to our goal. Social Media Envoy The job is far from done, more work is needed… Last year, you might remember the famed race to 1 million followers on Twitter between Ashton Kutcher and CNN. While the number of followers was the focal point, the true agenda was to raise awareness for Malaria as well as sending bed nets to Africa. This year, in conjunction with Ashton’s company Katalyst, United Nations Secretary- General’s Special Envoy for Malaria, Ray Chambers, announced a special Social Media Envoy group to continue the work. The Social Media Envoy group is chartered with inspiring social media audiences throughout the year in support of malaria control to achieve the Secretary-General’s goal of providing all endemic African countries with malaria control interventions by the end of 2010. The 2010 Social Media Envoys include: Queen Rania of Jordan Derrick Ashong , Musician, Social Activist & Oprah Radio host Veronica Belmont , Host of “Tekzilla” and “Qore” and Internet Personality Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, New Jersey Sarah Brown , of the United Kingdom Jason Calacanis , Founder and CEO of Mahalo.com Pete Cashmore , Founder and CEO of “Mashable—the Social Media Guide” Anderson Cooper , CNN Anchor of “Anderson Cooper 360” Dennis Crowley , Co-Founder of Foursquare Anil Dash , Director of Expert Labs and Partner at Activate Jack Dorsey , Creator, Co-Founder and Chairman of Twitter, CEO of Square Justine Ezarik “ iJustine ” Internet Personality Mahei Foliaki, “ @Iconic88 ” Internet Personality and Co-Founder of “The Internet Chef” Steve Frayne, “ Dynamo Magician ” Bill Gates , Chairman of Microsoft The Gates Foundation Jack Gray , CNN Producer/Writer for “Anderson Cooper 360” MC Hammer , Entertainer and Founder of Dancejam.com Arianna Huffington , Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Huffington Post Kim Kardashian Guy Kawasaki , Co-Founder of Alltop.com Larry King , CNN Host of “Larry King Live” Shira Lazar , Internet Personality Loic Le Meur, Founder and CEO of Seesmic Amy Martin , Founder of Digital Royalty Stefanie Michaels , “Adventure Girl”, Internet and Travel Personality Alyssa Milano , Actress Dave Morin , Former Facebook executive- responsible for Facebook Connect and Platform Jason Mraz , Singer-Songwriter and Social Activist Drew Olanoff , Social Activist Shaquille O’Neal , NBA Professional Athlete Jason Pollock , Film Director and Social Activist General Colin Powell , former U.S. Secretary of State, former Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Jeff Pulver , Founder of 140 Characters Conference (#140conf) and Co-Founder of VoIP (Vonage) Kevin Rose , Founder of Digg Chris Sacca , Founder of Lowercase Capital Ryan Seacrest , Founder, Ryan Seacrest Productions Brian Solis , Tech Entrepreneur, Author Jordin Sparks , Singer, Ambassador: “I’m M.A.D. Adding the Facebook Like Button To Your Site

Adding the Facebook Like Button To Your Site This content from: Duct Tape Marketing Some pretty big changes are brewing over at Facebook and I’m working on a full coverage type of piece, but for today I wanted to jump in and cover one little change that makes some sense for you to consider right now. Facebook has changed the idea of becoming a fan to something a little less committed – Like. Now you can like or recommend a fan page to your friends. The net effect is the same as your choice to like something is noted on your wall. The big change is that Facebook wants you to start sharing your likes from anywhere on the web. Look for web publishers to start installing the FB like button on web sites, blog posts and in reference to individual items and products. The video below gives an overview of the Like button installation process. You can use the FB tool easily get started or, if you know a little HTML and FBML you can do a fair amount of integration. I’ve installed both the Like Box (over in the right sidebar) and the Like Button (in each post) The code that is generated from the FB like tool gives you some flexibility but will only link to the page you give it. If you want to add a button as I have in each post you need to edit the code URL to include the WordPress < ?php the_permalink() ?> code for each individual post. You can control some of what’s shown on a person’s wall when they click the like button by adding meta data to your page headers. Facebook is using the emerging Open Graph protocol to help this along. The image below is another implementation of the Like button related to a specific product. In this case the format include pictures and details about who likes the product. Posted by cgseo under Social Media
Share The Right Way to Buy an Email List This content from: Duct Tape Marketing If you think you can forgo email marketing in favor of Twitter of Facebook you are sadly mistaken. Email marketing is still the most responsive form on online bar none. So, building up lists of emails is a task you must put some effort behind in order to kick your email marketing efforts into gear. The problem is nobody really wants more email, particularly spam from unknown sources. When I talk about buying email lists, I’m am not talking about buying or renting so called opt-in lists from list brokers. I’m talking about offering something of value as a way to motivate someone to willingly exchange their email address with you in order to receive your offers and additional contact. That’s right, the price of getting emails has gone up over the last few years and you’ve got to get creative in order to build your lists. You’ve got to earn those email subscribers! Here are a few offers that work every time 1) Great how to information . Create checklists, forms, and detailed instructions for things that your prospects might want to know or use. This is something you should be doing no matter what, but using this information to attract email addresses is a proven winner. Hubspot is a great example of a company that produces tons of useful info. 2) Free tools . Create templates, rank checkers, calculators and widgets and let people use them to their heart’s content and even enable them to pass them around. Aaron Wall of SEO Book is a master of this one. 3) Coupons . Give people something of value towards a purchase or free trial and watch them line to get on your list. You can use tools like CellFire to automate and deliver your coupons to mobile devices. 4) Access. Create a membership level for information and community that starts with registering. This can be done with membership software like WishListMember or even through a WordPress plugin that reveals additional content to registered users. Once you collect those email addresses keep pounding away with value, don’t abuse them with offer after offer. When you continue to add value through great content and education they will turn themselves into buyers and referral sources over time. Social network site providers continue to make social data more public and visible to third-parties. Facebook Further Reduces Your Control Over Personal Information Commentary by Kurt Opsahl Once upon a time, Facebook could be used simply to share your interests and information with a select small community of your own choosing. As Facebook’s privacy policy once promised , “No personal information that you submit to Facebook will be available to any user of the Web Site who does not belong to at least one of the groups specified by you in your privacy settings.” How times have changed. Today, Facebook removed its users’ ability to control who can see their own interests and personal information. Certain parts of users’ profiles, “including your current city, hometown, education and work, and likes and interests” will now be transformed into “connections,” meaning that they will be shared publicly. If you don’t want these parts of your profile to be made public, your only option is to delete them. Facebook Further Reduces Your Control Over Personal Information | Electronic Frontier Foundation
